Senate Sets June 2027 Deadline for Nigeria’s Constitutional Overhaul, Defies Election-Year Fears — Oyo Lens.

The Senate has vowed to conclude Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional amendment process before the 10th National Assembly winds down in June 2027, rejecting fears that preparations for the 2027 general elections could derail another major attempt at restructuring the country.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, gave the assurance in an exclusive interview, insisting that the amendment proposals already initiated by the current Assembly would be completed within its tenure.

Adaramodu said the January 2027 election timeline would not interfere with the legislative process, noting that the recently enacted Electoral Act had provided the legal framework for the conduct of the elections.

> “The proposed constitutional amendments, already started by the 10th National Assembly, shall be passed in the life of this current Assembly,” he said.

The Senate’s position comes amid concerns that intensifying political activities could stall the review, potentially repeating previous failed constitutional reform efforts and raising questions over public funds already committed to the exercise.

The proposed amendments are expected to address key issues surrounding governance, political restructuring and other aspects of Nigeria’s constitutional framework.

Under the law, however, constitutional alterations must clear rigorous legislative hurdles, including approval by the National Assembly and ratification by at least two-thirds of the 36 state Houses of Assembly.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, had similarly maintained that the 2027 political season would not distract lawmakers from their constitutional responsibilities, arguing that legislators could combine political engagements with their legislative mandate.

With electioneering activities gathering momentum, the Senate’s latest commitment places the constitutional review on a race against time, with its success ultimately hinging on legislative consensus and the cooperation of state lawmakers.
